The Personal Property Registry records security interests in movable assets that are used as collateral for loans. In Manitoba, when a lender takes a security interest in personal property—like equipment, inventory, vehicles, or other non-real assets—they register it in the PPR. This public notice helps perfect the lender’s interest and establish priority if the debtor defaults or if the property is sold or reorganized. It’s a tool to protect creditors and to inform others about encumbrances on those assets. This registry doesn’t deal with real property ownership, building permits, or expropriation notices, which are managed elsewhere. For example, a company that borrows money and puts its delivery trucks up as collateral would have that security interest registered in the PPR, giving the lender a formal claim to the trucks if repayment falters.
